Private Lands
The objective of the Private Lands Committee is to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire at the watershed scale in the Chumstick by implementing fuels reduction projects on private lands adjacent to USFS lands and beyond. Download our Private Lands Cost-Share Application and Supplemental Questionnaire and take the first step toward fuels reduction on your land! This program shares the cost of fuels reduction with the landowner, allowing a greater number of acres to be treated.
Last summer’s fire in Nahahum Canyon outside of Cashmere was a good reminder of just how fast fires can move. Defensible space (the area around homes where brush and small trees had been removed) was credited with saving homes and property.
The CWSC has funds available to help you reduce the wildfire risk on your property. To date, almost $20,000 will be distributed to participants in the CWSC Private Land Cost-Share Program.
Fuel reduction is time consuming and expensive, but you don’t have to bear the burden alone. Through the CWSC Private Land Cost-Share Program, you can receive up to $785 per acre to help offset the cost of treatment. You can complete the work yourself if you choose and be PAID to do so. Or you can hire a fuel reduction contractor and use your reimbursement to help cover the cost.
Participants work with a professional forester to identify a treatment plan. If privacy, a shade tree, or a branch with a rope swing is important to you, we can work with you. The Private Land Cost-Share Program focuses on small diameter material (less than 8” in diameter) and not big or old trees. Fuel reduction can improve the health of your property, as well as reduce your wildfire risk.
Applications are ranked by a group of non-resident CWSC partners using an index developed by the Private Lands Committee. Please encourage your neighbors to apply for the Private Lands Cost-Share Program; the more neighbors who apply the higher the likelihood of treatment in your area.
